Bartholomew and the Oobleck

Summary from Amazon: Bartholomew Cubbins serves thanklessly as pageboy to King Derwin of Didd, a headstrong man who's decided he isn't satisfied with mere sun, fog, rain, and snow. He wants something else, something uniquely his own, so he calls in his royal magicians. Happy to oblige, the magicians tell the king they can make "oobleck" fall from the sky, only nobody--not even the magicians--knows just what oobleck is. But after a night of arcane incantations, everyone in the kingdom gets a taste of the stuff, as the green, gluey goo gums up everything in sight.

The Mitten by Jan Brett

Summary from Jan Brett's website: When Nicki drops his white mitten in the snow, he goes on without realizing that it is missing. One by one, woodland animals find the mitten and crawl in; first a curious mole, then a rabbit, a badger and others, each one larger than the last. Finally, a big brown bear is followed in by a tiny brown mouse, and what happens next makes a wonderfully funny climax.

As the story of the animals in the mitten unfolds, the reader can see Nicki in the borders of each page, walking through the woods unaware of what is going on.

The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle

Summary from Scholastic: Carried from its flower home by the autumn wind, a tiny seed travels around the world. Its journey is perilous, and the reader learns the fate of fellow seeds: they can fall into the ocean, be burned by the sun, or be eaten by birds. Even those seeds that land and begin to grow are in danger of being stepped on or picked. Against the odds, however, this tiny seed survives to grow into a grand, beautiful flower, ready, in turn, to send its seeds out into the world on the wind.

Newton and Me by Lynne Mayer

Summary from Amazon: While at play with his dog, Newton, a young boy discovers the laws of force and motion in his everyday activities. Told in rhyme, Lynne Mayer s Newton and Me follows these best friends on an adventure as they apply physics to throwing a ball, pulling a wagon, riding a bike, and much more. They will realize that Newton s Laws of Motion describe experiences they have every day, and they will recognize how forces affect the objects around them. The For Creative Minds educational section includes: Force and Motion Fun Facts, Matching Forces, Who Was Newton?, and Newton s Laws of Motion (2 of 3).

Math Fables by Greg Tang

Summary from Scholastic: This is no ordinary counting book. It tells short rhyming stories incorporating animals and their environment in which each lives. Each mini story counts one number higher, but also uses other numbers, when put together, equal that higher number. So children have early exposure to more about numbers instead of just basic recognition and counting up. The illustrations are delightful, as happy animals of all kinds dance and flutter, swim and play across each page.
